PTI raises concerns over caretaker PM, CM’s eligibility to contest Senate polls
New Delhi: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has raised concerns about the eligibility of people associated with the caretaker government to compete in the upcoming Senate elections.
The PTI has cited constitutional constraints under Article 224(1B) of the constitution, saying that it does not allow the caretaker prime minister and the caretaker chief minister to participate in the Senate elections, according to a report by Dawn.
According to Article 224(1B), members of a caretaker Cabinet, including the caretaker PM and the caretaker CM, as well as their immediate family members, are not eligible to contest the Senate elections in the first assembly election after their interim tenure.
If they can’t contest the elections, how can they be able to join the cabinet of the incumbent government, asked PTI-backed MNA Ali Mohammad Khan.
Former PTI leader Shireen Mazari also expressed her displeasure with the upcoming Senate elections, calling them an “electoral circus”.
