Bowed heads & floral tributes. Modi, Shah, Rahul honour those killed in 2001 Parliament attack

New Delhi: On 13 December, 2024, the 23rd anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, political leaders gathered at the old Parliament building to honour those killed during the assault.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition of Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, and Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, among others, were also present to pay homage outside Samvidhan Sadan Friday.

The 2001 attack, carried out by five armed terrorists, was thwarted by the combined efforts of the Parliament Security Service (PSS), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Delhi Police, who ensured that none of the attackers managed to breach the building.

The incident, however, resulted in the deaths of six Delhi Police personnel, two members of the PSS, a gardener, and a TV video journalist. All five terrorists were neutralised in the forecourt of the old Parliament building.

During the commemoration, several political leaders were seen interacting with the families of those who lost their lives in the attack.

CISF personnel saluted, or offered a ‘salaami’, at the memorial site, followed by a moment of silence.
